Education

Picture
Delaware is seventh in the nation in spending per student on education, yet
depending on the source Delaware ranks between 27th and 43rd in the nation
in educational quality.  Taking this into account Caesar Rodney and Capitol
schools score below the state average on all standardized tests.  If you want
mediocrity, that is exactly what we have.  I for one want more for my children
than what is being provided now.

I feel the biggest issue is educational quality.  The districts and teachers
are more concerned about keeping their funding then educating our children.  If
they where to actually provide a high quality education to our children, the
funding and teacher jobs would never be in any jeopardy.  In my children’s
school district, I think it is an absolute travesty that if a student receives a
zero on an exam they are credited with a grade of sixty!  This begs the
question, What about the child who actually tried their best and received a
sixty?  Is this policy fair to them or the other children that got a 70, 80, 90,
etc.?  Clearly this policy is driven to ensure district funding and preserving
teachers jobs.  It is not in any way driven by any form of educational standard
and should be done away with.  I was informed at one parent teacher conference,
that when taking tests they don’t want to pressure students by giving them a
time limit to complete it.  I was then told that if it takes three days, that is
fine.  Some students just take longer to complete tasks.  My question to this is
why would it take anyone three days to complete a test, when they could go home,
get all the answers and go back the next day and finish the exam!  This is just
a couple examples of where the district is clearly failing.  I am sure that
there are many more that I or others are not aware of just yet.  We are not
preparing our students for the “real world”  where results are expected in a
timely matter.

Clearly the funding is here so what is the problem?  Why isn’t Delaware as a
whole looking at the highly successful districts and states to see what they are
doing so different then we are here?  We have the money, so why are we so far
behind.  I promise if elected I will work to find solutions and improve the
educational system in our state.  I will push for higher educational standards
and seek to model our districts on those that perform the best in our nation.

I want the best for my children and their success and in turn want the same
for all of your children as well.  I will fight for higher educational standards
and not sit by and settle for the mediocrity that we have become so accustomed
with.  Education is the most important thing that anyone can attain.  Knowledge
is power and knowledge is the one thing that can never be taken away from you
once you have it.  My goal is that all children in this state will be given the
knowledge they need to succeed in life.
